Lake Erie Metro Park
(note: long course – approximately 5600 meters)
On Thursday, August 28, twenty of the Hornet runners traveled to Lake Erie Metro Park to compete in the first ever Woodhaven Invitational.
With overcast skies and temperatures around 70, the conditions were unusually fall-like for a meet in late August. The main motivation for Saline attending this meet was to see the new course where our Regional will be held in late October. All was fine with the course except for the fact that it was long – not just long, but at least 500 meters long! We were assured that the course would be accurate when we return in October. With the course measuring at something like 5500 meters rather than 5000 meters, the times were appropriately slow – though in the 11/12 race, we were able to get a time at what was stated to be the 5000 meter mark.
There were no team scores in this event, and there were two races for the girls – one for the freshmen and sophomores and one for the juniors and seniors. Saline runners raced well in the underclassman event with several of the Hornet athletes competing in their first high school 5K competition. Sophomore Meghan McGregor led the way for Saline with a 4th place finish, and freshmen Amy Creutz and Katie Colosimo were not far behind finishing 5th and 7th respectively. Rounding out Saline runners in the top 10 were freshmen Calley Jastrow(9th) and Samanthana Szuminski(10th).
In the junior/senior race, Saline dominated the other teams as Hornet runners swept the top 7 places. Junior All-Stater Alex Leptich captured individual honors finishing in 21:04, and Alex was closely followed by teammates Erin Dowling and Kate Carter, who took the #2 and #3 spots in the race. Following Kate was Rachel Jackson (4th), Desi O’Brien (5th), Christian Gonzalez (6th), and Regan Johnston (7th).
Though no team scores were kept, all Saline runners brought home an individual medal for their efforts – and the knowledge that their next race would probably be closer to 5000 meters rather than 5500 meters.
